Writing
I like to write – sometimes it’s even good!
I have experience in various kinds of writing, including concept development, screenwriting, blogging, “scholarly” writing, and short-fiction writing.
Concept Development
I was one of two writers in the 8-man creative team of interns that originally developed and pitched the concept for the upcoming Nintendo-exclusive platformer “Epic Mickey”, a title I believe is destined to reinvigorate the Mickey Mouse icon and launch a new entertainment franchise. I worked under the direction of Chris Takami; the game is now being developed by video game god Warren Spector. More.
Screenwriting
I write most of the scripts for my video projects. But it doesn’t stop there! I try to create a complete pre-production strategy to help streamline the process and save time and/or money. I’m an advocate of the Celtx open-source pre-production development platform.
Scholarly Writing and Research
I picked up a special interdisciplinary studies bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California, focusing on animation and creative writing. To complete the degree, I needed to compile a special thesis, Animated Interactive Narratives. You can see the project here (or download the PDF).
Recently, I completed a master’s degree in communication in digital media (MCDM) at the University of Washington. Most of my coursework is published to my blog, Nerd Acumen.
One of the key research projects for my MCDM was a white paper (pdf here, embeddable Slideshare document here) written for Anita Crofts’ “Emerging Markets in Digital Media” Fall 2009 course. My paper, entitled “The Emerging Market for Pocketmedia Storytelling in the Developing World” (video, accompanying slide presentation embedded below) was delivered 5 December 2009.
Something else you might find interesting is my comprehensive study of “electronic dating”, prepared for Kathy Gill’s “Evolution of Digital Media” course, Winter 2009. Click the thumbnail below to go to the study.
Fiction Writing
I’ve been dabbling in short fiction on-and-off much of my life. A collection of some of my short fiction is available at Lulu.com, in this book I entitled “I Don’t Read”. It’s called “I Don’t Read” because I don’t read. No, just kidding – I read the Internet!
